The Canmore mines closed on Friday, July 13, 1979. This is a notice from Victor Mrokwia, general superintendent of the Canmore mines posted notifying miners of their last shift of work. Operating the Canmore coal mines in the 1970s had become too difficult. The Dillingham Corp., which bought the mines in 1970, lost money seven out of nine years it had owned the mines for a total of $3 million. Losses averaged out to be $100,000 a month.
