Canmore Miners’ Day

This Friday, July 13 marks the 33rd anniversary of Black Friday – Friday, July 13, 1979 – the day that Canmore’s coal mines closed after 92 years of operation. To mark Black Friday and to honour Canmore’s coal-mining past, Canmore’s mining families will take to Main Street Saturday at noon for the annual Canmore Miners’ Day parade, immediately followed by a free public barbecue at the Canmore Miners’ Union Hall. Come down and meet the people who made Canmore what it is.

As part of Miners’ Day, the Canmore Museum & Geoscience Centre, at 2 p.m., will open its newest exhibition Jewels of the Bow: An exploration of the Canmore Museum Collection. It’s an exhibit a year in the making and it promises the tell the stories of the museum’s most intriguing artifacts.
